Last night we kept all the windows firmly shut, only a couple of house flies to pester us overnight, no more midges and more importantly no more bites. The existing ones are being a right pain, even the one I’d doused with cream immediately has decided to join in with the others!
There she is in the Humber with the red box
Knowing that Exol Pride would be on it’s way at some point we decided to stay put for the day. The thought being we’d rather be moored on rings, bollards or chains when she comes past than on spikes. Here we have chains. We checked on Vessel Finder to see her position, the Humber. They don’t always have their GPS tracker on and it usually gets turned off when they reach Goole. But on the website it suggested that she was due in Goole this morning, would they continue on up to Rotherham today?
A little rest before I go out again
Tilly was given nine whole hours, it being a drier day she made full use of them, only returning to the boat when she really had to.
With very itchy arms and back I needed to find a distraction. I chose the shower, it needed a very good clean. All the edging strips were removed for cleaning. The doors taken down one at a time for a full clean. The rest of the cabinet given a very good going over with cleaner and vinegar. The shower condiment basket was given a good scrub too.
Sparkling, well almost!
Then the walls and ceiling were attacked. This was doing a very good job of distracting from my midge bites, but in the process I somehow managed to cut stumpy (the tip of my little finger that is no more). It’s nothing major and anywhere else it wouldn’t really bother me in the slightest, but right by the scar tissue…!! Ow!
Redoing the sealant will be the next job for the shower, I’ve been putting this off for a very long time as I hate sealant. We also only have a tube of white onboard and the corner of the cubicle would really want clear as the panels are blue. The shower gets used just about every day, so being able to leave it to cure for a day or two when we are away would be good. All of these are just excuses though, I will get round to it, I will.
At around 2pm Mick could hear an engine coming our way. A quick glance out of the stern doors confirmed that the big blue boat was on its way to Rotherham.

She slowly crossed the aqueduct, speed not possible in the narrow channel. Then once clear she sped up a touch. Though not going at full pelt she still was pushing a bow wave. We watched as she came closer, three crew on board. Blimey she was carrying a weight.
Why can’t I be on the catwalk!
Tilly came to watch too, being asked not to stand on the cat walk whilst Exol Pride passed. Then the wash started to hit us, our ropes taking the strain, maybe it’s time to get the new ropes out as the stern one has seen better days. We’ll save these mangy ropes for our next visit to York with all its silt.
Bye then
During the day we seemed to have been attracting flies again. Not midges but house flies. Mick spent much of the day trying to suck them up in the handheld hoover, semi successful. Then he made a fly trap from a plastic pot with holes in the lid and a glug of red wine in the bottom. This seemed to attract them to the area, just not into the pot to die a drunken death. So the hoover kept coming out, Mick launching himself at the pesky flies. We still don’t know if the charge at them method works better than the sneaking up behind them method.

Sykehouse Junction to Bramwith Junction, Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation
Well overnight those little blood sucking b**tards made a feast of me, by the end of today I could count ten bites. The only one that wasn’t complaining was the one I saw happen so I applied cream to the area straight away which most probably helped greatly. I don’t think I’ve been eaten so much since I was a child!
A good vantage point
It was raining when we woke so we decided to let Tilly judge when we should move on today. The back doors opened for her to head off and explore. But she really couldn’t be bothered with getting soggy so early in the day, so she went straight back to bed.
River Went Aqueduct
The weather improved and by 11 we were rolling back the covers and getting ready to push off to cruise from one end of the New Junction Canal to the other. Opening in 1905 the canal was jointly funded by the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation and the Aire and Calder Navigation. It links the River Don Navigation, Stainforth and Keadby Canal to the Aire and Calder and was the last waterway to be built in England for commercial purposes. It stretches 5.5 miles and is dead straight, however this doesn’t mean it’s plane sailing as there are 6 bridges and 1 lock to operate. It looks like originally there were another two bridges now long since gone.
Commercial traffic still works these waters with Exol Pride running oil between Hull and Rotherham. Mick had noticed on vessel finder that the big blue boat had set off for Hull today, we assume they’ll return to Goole tomorrow and then head up the canal Wednesday.
Went End Footbridge
Once winded we crossed the Went Aqueduct passing under one of two footbridges on the canal that didn’t require any action from us. With nobody behind us today we’d not be leapfrogging our way along.
Going up
Soon at Sykehouse Road Lift Bridge I hopped off with the key of power. Waiting for a gap in traffic is all fine when you can see both ways, but from the control panel you can only see for about 20 foot either side. When crossing the road I’d noticed a car being overtaken and could still hear the engine running, however it wasn’t getting any closer. I’d expected it to have passed by now, so I had to walk back up onto the bridge and take a peek, there was the car, closer than before, still in the middle of the road with people stood round it chatting. It wouldn’t be coming anytime soon, so time to push the buttons. I held up 3 vehicles here.
One coming through
At Kirk Lane Road Swing Bridge we could see the barriers coming down, closing the bridge to road traffic, someone was coming the other way, we sped up hoping they’d see us. Once swung the bow of their boat came into view, the chap at the helm spotting us and relaid the information to the button presser. 0 vehicles were held up here.
Sykehouse Lock
The amber light was lit at Sykehouse Lock, meaning it was on self service. This lock is often manned and on the several occasions we’ve been through I’ve only had to operate it once.
This lock is operated with the key of power, as most locks round here, but it does have one difference it has three control panels and a swing bridge right over the middle of it.
Central panel
Your key goes in the central panel, which doesn’t have any buttons on it, but once turned your key is retained until all is closed again.
Swing Bridge open to the lock
A click can be heard from the road barriers for the swing bridge. These are manually pushed round until they lock in position closing the track that crosses the lock. You then lift the locking latch and swing the bridge out of the way until it locks into another latch. This completes a circuit which enables the lock now to be operated, the two panels, one either end illuminating.
The chamber was empty so I opened the gates and Mick brought Oleanna in, he hung back and passed a rope around a bollard whilst I closed the gates and then walked up to the other end to the panel there. The lock is 215ft long, Oleanna seemed a very long way away.
Button pressed and held for 2 seconds and the sluices started to open, they do this in stages until fully opened. Once full the Water Level light illuminates and you can open the gates, letting your boat out.
Sluices closed, gates closed. Time to lift the latch on the swing bridge to be able to close it again. This releases the locked barriers. Once the bridge is back in it’s latch and the barriers are opened the central panel gives a little click meaning your key can be retrieved again.
0 vehicles were held up here, 2 cyclists stopped for a banana break before retracing their route southwards.

The next bridge is around 1.75 miles away, but along this stretch there used to be two more bridges, one obviously was a swing bridge, the other has left little if any evidence of it’s existence.
Lift
Kirkhouse Green Lift Bridge, I managed to get 6 vehicles here.

Top Lane Lift Bridge, the barriers came down as we got close, another boat coming through. We were waved on and passed under thanking the lady at the panel and only holding up 1 .
Swinging the last bridge
At Low Lane Swing Bridge you need to use your ears as the road bends round either side out of view. I couldn’t hear anyone approaching so pressed the button to open. Here we held up 2 vans.
Don Doors
Ahead were the Don Doors. These are two guillotine gates that are lowered at either end of the Don Aqueduct when the river below goes into flood. The aqueduct in normal times is full to the brim, any excess water spills over the sides down into the Don.

By now the sky was getting very dark again and the wind had picked up. After a couple of loads of washing yesterday we were wanting a top up, so we turned left towards Bramwith Lock where there is a water point just above it.

The tank filled as the heavens opened. A narrowboat came up the lock with the assistance of a C&RT Lockie. This chap is in charge of volunteers in the area. Last year they had 8, this year there are now 30 volunteer lock keepers and rangers, he’s kept very busy training them all.
Not wanting to descend the lock, we also didn’t want to get pinned against it’s top gates by the wind, so Mick decided to reverse back up to the junction before winding. We then pulled in to the towpath, tied up and let Tilly out. Well she wasn’t too pleased that it was raining and hung back for a while. Then she was off to stare into the friendly cover.

Cuppas in bed with the Saturday newspaper were disturbed at just gone 9 as the first shots could be heard ringing out from Park Lodge on the other side of the Aire and Calder Navigation. Here people can have a go at clay pigeon shooting whilst others can enjoy a massage in the spa, I really hope the treatment rooms are sound proof! Or maybe everyone is given ear defenders on arrival.
Go away! I’m busy!!
Before breakfast we moved the boat. 180 degrees to face the other direction. This needed to happen before we let Tilly out for the day, a full 9 hours worth of shore leave.
They had swung the outside round, so it was on the other side. No delay for disembarking, I’d already sussed this and headed straight into the friendly cover to find some friends.
Much better than a Wetherspoons
Mick delved deep into the freezer and found the last of the sausages we’d bought in Oxford back in November, time they were eaten. So he cooked us a few bits and pieces to accompany them. It all went down well and no lunch would be needed today.
Gone
Time to clean out the window frames on the starboard side. These are a little bit more troublesome to get to with the bed, sofa and dinette in the way. But I persevered. I think this is the first time the sliding window above the sink has had a good clean out. With the amount of compost I found in it I could have re-potted the Christmas tree!
Tilly was very bemused when I took the bathroom porthole out. She is used to pleading through this window, one paw forlornly round the side of the glass and her teary eye just visible through the gap to any passing gongoozler at locks. But here the opening was accessible. She considered an entrance but decided to carry on being busy on the towpath instead.
My little thug
Mick did a couple of loads of washing and hung them out on the whirligig. As I finished the last window it started to rain. I managed to clean the cratch windows before it came down with any force whilst Mick scrambled to bring the washing in, still damp. This then got hung under the pram cover where it couldn’t get any wetter.
Rain
For the last couple of days Mick has spent several hours on the phone to Virgin to cancel our internet contract with them. At first the options sent him round and round in circles and then cut off, but yesterday he’d managed to get into the queue several times before getting very bored waiting for someone to answer.
At last today he got through to a human being and managed to cancel the contract with immediate effect, this was a surprise as it normally takes a month to do such things. But sure enough within five minutes of hanging up our internet stopped working. Brilliant no overlap of contracts.
Black skies, just after the rainbow had vanished
On Friday Mick had checked the sim card worked so today it should just be a case of popping it in and off we’d go. Well it worked intermittently, but then so did our phones. Was this a problem with EE just as we swapped over? We’d been warned that for the first 24 hours the service may drop in and out, but then it should be fine. This is what we are hoping is the case. Time will tell.
Time to use some of the ginger! I’d hunted round on the internet for a recipe to incorporate some with a roast chicken. For this I had to zuzz up some cloves and fennel seeds, then make a paste with loads of garlic, some spices, a big chunk of ginger, then add soya sauce and sugar. Pour this over the chicken and then cook it covered for 3/4 of the roasting time then uncovered to crisp up the skin. The aroma was good as it cooked and the end result was very tasty.

The rain seemed to have brought out a mass of midges, several hundred had found their way indoors. Mick ran around with the hand held hoover trying to suck them up. Then I swatted as many as I could before the lights went out. There’s nothing worse than the sound of a tineey tiny blood sucking insect wizzing around the room, sounding like it’s right by your ear getting it’s fangs out to have a good drink!
Opposite Goole Waterways Museum to Sykehouse Junction, New Junction Canal
The VHF radio was turned on this morning so we could listen in to the docks. Plenty of stuff was going on. Ships approaching Goole were having to ease their speed on their approach.
Then Little Shuva a Goole tug could be seen across the way from us. Moored up alongside the concrete plant (Goole is not the most idyllic spot on the network, but fascinating as a working port) is a large boat, not sure if it is powered or just used as a skip, but Little Shuva pushed up alongside so a chap could step off onto it. He looked down a hatch in the bow and then pulled over a large yellow rope onto the bow of Shuva. Before leaving he tightened both bow ropes and did a full circuit of the boat before stepping back onboard and returning down to the docks. The Harbour master chirping up on the radio checking that Shuva would be needed in the docks shortly.
I wonder if these big ships count how many cars they hold up?
Just when it was getting really interesting it was time to join the Geraghty’s on the weekly zoom, so sadly the big ships would be busy whilst we caught up with family. Today’s topics the Proms, Covid tests for 14 month old children, life after working in the states and Goal Keepers loosing their legs! Everyone was fine and we wished Sean good luck with work in Italy next week.
Mick cycled down for a newspaper. Our paper wasn’t available at the Co-op so he then headed to WH Smiths. This meant crossing the docks just as a ship was leaving, reversing through one of the swing bridges. I was really quite jealous at not being there.
Tilly had been allowed shore leave for a couple of hours, coming nose to nose with the German Shepherd early on. We know who’d have one should no human have interjected! Now we were all back on board it was time to fill up the tanks across the way.
Big enough space
The diesel point at Goole Boathouse seems to always be windy and the bollards are not in the right position for us to tie to Add to this a cruiser moored on the corner and the wonderful 1907 Phyllis at the other end it is quite hard to position a 58ft 6″ narrowboat in the right spot so that the hose reaches. The gap was big enough for us, we just had to overhang one boat or the other to be able to fill up. We’d considered getting a new gas bottle too, but with the bow a long way out that job can wait a while.

At 65p a litre Mick made sure he made the most of it. Then we moved over to the water point, a cruiser had moved out of the way for us, so we felt we had to. With all jobs done including disposing of yellow water and rubbish we were wanting some lunch. We moved up to the end of the visitor moorings and tied up where Sobriety used to live.
You’re not wanted here!
Here we were faced with numerous NO MOORING signs. There were also notes from the Liquidators for the Museum stating that no one can moor here. The moorings had been part of a long lease to the Sobriety Project and therefore are part of the liquidation process. The signs were quite curt suggesting we should move on immediately. We had our lunch and then did as we were told.
Clinging onto our hats once again we made our way back up the wide waterway. At times it is so wide we suspect even Exol Pride could wind. Boats were dotted here and there each with a good stretch of social distancing before the next moored boat.
Stinky
Going past the marina at Rawcliffe the smell from Croda was really quite pongy, it didn’t feel like it would be doing anyone any good. Apparently they make lanolin by refining wool grease, well it certainly is pongy!
So much room
At Southfield Reservoir plenty of people were out making the most of the breeze. Windsurfers and dinghys were zooming back and forth at great speed, all fine when you can cling on and lean into the wind, but a pain once you’ve fallen in!
Perfect weather for it
At the junction we turned left and joined two other boats on the moorings. I’d been wanting to tackle the starboard side windows, but the wind and our later than planned arrival meant I put the job on hold. Instead some buckwheat pasta was made for a lasagne along with a batch of rosemary and thyme sourdough crackers. The stove was lit and after several hours of being busy on the towpath Tilly made the most of it.

Pushing off around 10:30 we had some miles to cover by boat and foot to arrived in time for my appointment at EE in Goole.
Big Skies
The waterways around here do very big skies. This does however mean little shelter from the wind, we wore our waterproof coats to cheat the wind.
At Great Heck service yard we were surprised at the number of fridges and freezers piled up on the side. None of them really looked like they had been pulled out from the depths of the canal as they were still all very white, little if any signs of silty water. Just where have they all come from? Plenty of work boats were in too, several looking like they were having services.
A local big boat
We’re in the land of big boats now. Like a gold fish grows to fit the size of its bowl, boats grow in size to meet the size of the waterway. Lets face it there’s plenty of room round here, if you want to wind you don’t have to travel miles to do so, unless you’re a big boat that is!
Coming in towards Pollington Lock we could see someone had beaten us to the lock, a Dutch Barge. Would there be space for us too? We picked up speed to catch them up, plenty of room as we came in alongside them. There was chance for chat to the fella in the wheelhouse before the gates opened, we led the way below as they were stopping for water.
Overtaking
Today we were to see the most boats moving since possibly Skipton. One narrowboat came out ahead of us from the moorings below the lock, their speed a touch slower than ours, so Mick sped up a touch to overtake.
Up by the New Junction Canal Junction there was another slowish boat, he pulled over to let us pass which we managed before a cruiser came towards us and well before the junction. Straight on to Goole!
Northern Power
Drax was now in our sights working away burning biomass, wood pellets much like cat litter. Then we turned back towards the east only one slight bend between us and Goole Docks now.
Plenty of room round here
We passed the chap who’d wanted to go to York but had problems with his recently installed bowthruster and then at Rawcliffe WB Yorkshire Pud was tied up, whom we’d moored alongside at Goole Boathouse last year.
Then with a zoom on the camera I could spy the big blue stern of Exol Pride moored up. She was pointing in the direction of Hull so we most probably won’t have to worry about her for a few days.
Big ships now
Under the railway bridge we had a choice of where to moor. On our left where we spent a week early last year, popular with dog walkers who arrive in their cars. Lots of room in front of the closed Goole Waterways Museum now all their boats have moved off for sale. Down at the Visitor Moorings there only looked to be one boat. We chose the first option, better for Tilly once we’d returned from town.

Over a kilometer to walk to the main road and then nearly another to reach town we left plenty of time for the walk.
First port of call, Argos. Mask donned, reference number read out, I had a phone again.
Always worth a visit
Second port of call, Boyes. I wanted a couple of new paint brushes and Boyes do a range that are pretty good quality at a reasonable price. I also got some wet dry sandpaper for between coats of paint. Mick had come out without his mask, so a box of emergency masks was added to my shopping.
Very helpful staff
We were about three quarters of an hour early for my appointment, but as one of the assistants was busy writing a card for a family member, they weren’t rushed off their feet. For the first time ever on walking into a mobile phone shop we were seen straight away and were their only customers. With two assistants we had one each.
I got sorted with a replacement Sim and my plan was reduced by £2 a month, admittedly my data was reduced too, but I never use it all anyway. Mick enquired about a new Sim for Oleanna’s router. We currently have a plan that started off being £20 for 100GB which has since morphed into unlimited for another £7, we never used the 100GB so would rather not be spending the extra money. EE could do us 100GB for £20 and because it could be tagged onto Mick’s account we got another 10% off so saving £9 a month. It was a deal. So to celebrate we headed to Tesco and bought ourselves an Indian for this evening, spending this months saving straight away.
All ready to get going
Back at the far side of the docks, we’d been joined by another narrowboat with a big German Shepherd. Mick chatted with the owners before we let Tilly out for a couple of hours. They thought they’d seen Tilly come home, so let their dog run free. Tilly had been home for her ‘Thank you for coming home’ Dreamies, but then gone straight back out again. For the remainder of the afternoon we had a very nosy dog peering into Oleanna, making me jump on one occasion.
Google backup is a wonderful thing and my new phone was very soon resembling my old one. But a few things had changed or not been remembered. Tilly has been my wallpaper for quite some time, now she was super sized and scans across the different pages as you swipe sideways, her big yellow eyes now following my every move. A few aps were missing and a few passwords had gone awol. Just a shame the phone numbers that went missing a couple of handsets ago are still missing! Oh well, sorry if your name begins with N!
So I’m back up and running. My new phone will not be going on a towel or in a pocket again, after all girls pockets are much too small for modern mobiles, unlike boys pockets!

West Haddlesey Flood Lock to Whitley Lock, Aire and Calder Navigation
Another attempt to find my phone this morning. The endoscope was used again, but came up with nothing. Then we both had a trawl with the landing net. The bottom of the canal is certainly not smooth, rocks get in the way then all of a sudden there is another foot of depth. So after a while we gave up.
Last attempt
Last time this happened I was able to purchase a new phone from Argos and get a new sim card from EE relatively easily, so I tried again. The phone I had is no longer available, but the next version was out of stock at Selby, Doncaster and Goole. I could order one, but it wouldn’t be delivered until the end of the weekend. Another model was checked out, a similar spec, this one a little bit more expensive of course was ready to be picked up in any store I wanted!
The Flood Lock
Not wanting to go back to the nearest option, Selby again, I checked stock elsewhere I clicked the buy button, then made an appointment to visit the nearest EE shop for a sim card. Time to plot our route to Goole.
The rain yesterday had lifted the river levels a touch. A quick check of the levels board on the other side of the lock. Through the muddy residue I could make out a few inches of green, yesterday there had been a foot. Time to make a move, not wanting to get stuck again.
All around the lock at West Haddlesey there are figures and bunting. I’d originally thought they had been made to keep youngsters occupied and to celebrate VE day. But now I’m not so certain. Maybe they are for some sort of pagan ritual. The shrunken head on a branch was a touch alarming!
Leaving the lock behind
Leaving the lock as found, one top paddle raised a third to help keep the levels on the canal up, we turned west away from Eggborough Power Station. Then back to face it, then away again. Blimey it was windy out there!
A moving boat!
I kept a close eye out to see if at any one time all three power stations would be visible, but as a third one came into view another would have just vanished behind a river bank.
Oleanna pushed her way upstream, in and out of the wind, the current stronger than when we’d come down. An hour later we arrived at Beale Lock and worked our way up. Swifts dashed and darted across the lock cutting, today there was no white dusty scum on the water or in the air.
Bank Dole Lock
Pushing on we had a snack and a cuppa as we cruised, passed a couple of boats heading down stream and another hour later arrived at Bank Dole Lock where both bottom gates had been left open. This was to our advantage, but a right pain if you’d been coming from above. I hopped off, Mick pulled over to the port side, roped up, gates closed, then I lifted the starboard side paddle, the port side not working.
Last manual lock for a while
Our last manual lock for quite some time, we prepared for a wait as its an extreamly slow filler. I was surprised that we were just about level after twenty minutes. Although the last inch took its’ time before the top gate could be opened.
At Bank Dole Junction the big boats here have had a reshuffle. Sometime very soon gravel barges will be starting to do the journey from Hull, to Goole and then on to Leeds. The position of the big boats would have caused problems for a fully laden commercial craft.
Ready for commercial craft to pass
Heading eastwards we passed Kellingley Colliery, the last deep-pit coal mine in Britain which closed in 2015. Now very little gives away the site, the odd mound of slag, but all the buildings have been demolished and the sign by the wharf have now gone.
On the other side of the railway a huge solar farm spreads across the land, Eggborough Power Station (old power) in the back ground.
Some familiar boats were passed. What felt like a new stretch of moorings on the off side close to the M62. One boat with a lot of fenders. We could have stopped at the Jolly Millers Moorings, but decided to carry on, we knew a better place for Tilly.
Under the M62
Just under the M62 is Whitley Lock. The key of power would now be doing the hard work for us instead of my arms and windlasses. It always seems such a huge amount of water for one little narrowboat to change height.
Below we pulled into a space and tied up. Tilly had the run of the grassy mooring for the rest of the afternoon. Mick down loaded my settings onto the phone we use for Waterway Routes so I could keep an eye on the world, no one can call me yet, I’ll need a sim card for that, but within range of our wifi I can keep an eye on emails etc.

I hate it when it’s blowy up my bum! So not fare. Then there were woofers. One who’s Tom was really thick. ‘He’s not seen a cat for years’, he then sat at the nearest bench to Oleanna and let his woofer sniff round everywhere I’d been. At one point it looked like it was going to come inside! Apparently last time they tied this outside up I liked it, I’m not so sure now!
Come and play conkers!
She came out and we had a good game of conker. Her conker skills with her toe were really quite good. I got to chase them all around, but when I did catch them they were a touch too spiky and they looked very covid like. I think I’ll stick to playing with my bedoingee balls inside.

A call from the Sainsburys delivery driver asking could he be early was welcome, he arrived quarter of an hour before our slot. We were glad to see that the plastic bags that had been compulsory during lockdown have now gone mostly. This does mean delivery takes a little bit longer, but the driver was happy for the crates to be put on the stern of Oleanna and then for us to sort our purchases before handing them back. Sadly they had sent a substitution for Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, not a good choice in my opinion so it was left on the van. Stocks of white wine should last for a while longer.
A mighty chunk of ginger
The dates on a box of eggs were a touch disappointing, but at least they arrived in recyclable cardboard rather than the plastic boxes we’ve had on the last couple of deliveries. I did have to laugh at the amount of ginger that we got too, washing peg for scale, we’ll have to have ginger and lamb with everything we eat !
Swapping at the bridge
With everything stowed we headed for the swing bridge managing to time it well with Richard and Heather bringing Isabella through. Needing to dispose of rubbish we also topped up the water tank. We’ve been seeing numerous photos of overflowing bins around the network since the Bank Holiday weekend, here in Selby there was plenty of space.

Jobs done Mick winded Oleanna, leaving NB Gandja by the lock, they’d made it from Naburn yesterday and as we pulled away back towards the swing bridge it looked like WB Doofer was just coming into the lock from the tidal water, another escapee from York.
See you again somewhere Isabella
Through the bridge we had to keep a very keen eye on our position on the Waterway Routes map. According to our trip computer Oleanna was about to reach a mile stone. After 0.59 miles of todays journey Oleanna had reached her 4000th mile, just before Bawtry Road Bridge. There were Hoorays!!! all round.
A short distance further on a crane was in the process of lifting a weed boat into the cut. These don’t collect duck weed, but would most probably be used to cut and collect the pennywort that is taking over in parts. A touch further on we pushed past the large island we’d encountered yesterday and then we gave a reedy island a centre parting.

Nearly two hours later we passed under Tankard’s Stone Bridge and had a choice of where to pull up at West Haddlesey. The flood lock ahead was closed which wasn’t that surprising and a short while later WB Doofer came past and worked their way through onto the River Aire.
Some cookie dough had just finished baking when two familiar heads bobbed along the top of Tankard’s Stone Bridge, we had visitors. Bridget and Storm our friends who used to own NB Blackbird had come to have a catch up whilst we were reasonably close. We all sat out on the moorings having tea and biscuits chatting away the afternoon, lots to catch up on as we haven’t seen them for around 18 months.
Doofer at the flood lock
Whilst part way through telling a story I maybe leaned forward just a touch, the contents of my pocket slide out and made a small plop noise as it hit the surface of the water and glid down to the bottom of the canal. My bloomin phone! We had a look to see if we could see it, maybe the metallic cover would glint back at us? Maybe it wouldn’t.
My Northern thug
We tried a torch, then Mick got out his endoscope, but couldn’t get it to work. So we gave up till later, it wouldn’t be going anywhere and we had guests.
The Wasp crew back together
The rain beat it’s forecast by an hour or so. We persevered sitting outside for a while, but in the end gave in a retreated to inside. Bridget and Storm are the first two people to step onboard since March other than ourselves. We did our best to keep our distances whilst we had another cuppa and finished off the cookies. A lovely afternoon with plans of another meeting in the next month or so, hopefully.
It then peed it down! Not conducive for trying to find a mobile phone at the bottom of the cut. But when it started to dry up a touch Mick got his endoscope working. He worked his way along where we’d marked the spot the surface of the water had devoured my phone. A glimpse of something, yes it was my phone. Now how to get it out?
A net that can see
The endoscope was tied onto the end of our cat landing net and this was used to try to locate it again. Sadly this meant the silt got stirred up and the water became cloudy. So we decided to wait until dark when our powerful torch might just help.
Delving into the depths
With the boat pushed out from the bank we shone the torch round. Holding it at an angle worked best as you could see where the beam hit on the canal bottom. But sadly nothing was obviously phone shaped. A trawl around with the landing net again didn’t bring anything up other then the silt. The hope of recovering my phone to possibly be able to reuse the sim card was drifting away. I’d be needing a replacement one of those as well as a phone! I really shouldn’t have mentioned about throwing my phone in the cut in yesterdays post!

Burn Bridge to Gateforth Landing to Selby Swing Bridge
Tilly was allowed out as soon as we were up, no rush to get anywhere today. As she was out I took the opportunity to give the port side windows and frames a really good clean. This job hasn’t been done since we were in Mexborough beginning of last year.
Only glass on the towels today
First thing was to check that my phone was safely on a table and nowhere near the towels I would lay the panes of glass on. Last time I gave one of these a shake out of the hatch and lost my phone to the deepest depth of the South Yorkshire Navigations!
Before
It’s a two person job to get the glass out from the frames due to our curtains being tethered at the bottoms. Someone has to pull one side right back to be able to eek the window past, but then I was on my own.
Clean, must sort the wood surround out next
Armed with water, a cloth, an old toothbrush, handheld vac and cotton buds I set about clearing out the debris that collects in the channels of the frame. Yuck! Then washing the dirt and green stuff away before giving the rubber strips a good wash and checking that all the drainage holes were clear. Then each window got a very good clean, sparkling on both sides. I really should do this more often then it wouldn’t be such a big job, but there are other things I’d rather do in life.

Tilly was bemused that all of a sudden there were three one way openings on the side of the boat instead of just one. Of course as soon as the glass was back in the frame she returned to make an inspection. At least they got a Mrs Tilly Stamp of approval! Grrr!
The portholes have a couple of little supports in the bottom of the frame. Some of them work quite well, others have moved over the last few years and you have to jiggle the glass around to make it sit in a good place to be able to lock them. The supports had a thin bit of foam stuck to them. I decided to try replacing this with what we had to hand, a bit of weedhatch tape (sticky on one side and about 5mm of foam the other). The glass now sits a little higher and the lock works much better.
Cover
Mick spent some time with the cover of the inverter off. In the last week the cooling fan has been kicking in at odd times. We’re used to it coming on when the washing machine of dishwasher are working it hard. But these recent occasions have been when nothing unusual has been running.
Brains of Oleanna
He spent a bit of time watching a video from Victron, then removed the cover revealing all the brains that keep our power needs fulfilled. He’d wondered if an accumulation of dust inside might be causing the fan to run. Nothing obvious, a circuit board was removed to look further inside, gave it a little blow, but no dust. All was put back together, we’ll see if it happens again.
Waiting for bread
After lunch I moved onto the sliding galley window. I got to know the anatomy of it quite well. The frame being the same as the other windows just with a central bar added. Sliding it this way and that, removing rubber surrounds in the channels. This window was a replacement last year to a normal hopper. It’s not opened quite as far as the one on the other side of the galley, so I trimmed some of the rubber which seems to act as a stopper, making sure it stops short of the handle hitting the other pane of glass. Job done we could make a move.
Tomorrow we have a Sainsburys delivery back in Selby by the waste recycling centre. With no winding holes marked on our map we planned to cruise to West Haddlesey, go through the flood lock wind, drop back onto the canal and return to Selby. Quite a long way to go to turn round.
The duck weed has now been joined by quite a build up of pennywort. Large clumps float around, one such clump caught our bow, visible from the stern on both sides. It took a bit of manoeuvring to shift it, which was a relief as the drag factor could be felt instantly.
Gateforth Landing
Mick had spent a bit of time on Google earth to see if there was anywhere possibly wide enough for us to turn, nothing was obvious. As we reached Gateforth Landing, here there is a mooring by a high wall, the width looked possible and we knew the depth by the wall would be good so Mick gave it a go.
He found a gap in the off side sideways trees and turned the bow into it. A bit of shuffling round, but there was enough space. We winded, just in time before a cruiser came into view, only our second boat we’ve seen moving since we arrived on the canal yesterday. That wind saved us about 3 miles of cruising.
On our way back to Selby
Back in Selby before 5pm we moored up next to the layby to await our delivery in the morning. Tilly a touch disappointed to not be going out again, but she has got views to keep her occupied.

The voice of Houdini woke us at 6:20, we were up and dressed leaving Tilly to have a lie in. Cuppas were brewed and put in insulated mugs ready for the off. Yesterday Kenny (Lock Keeper) had changed the penning down time from 8am to 7:30am, not sure why. Maybe the amount of fresh water would help us on our way downstream against the incoming tide? Or because we were penning down with two cruisers heading for Goole this was a better time for all?
Happy to be on the move again
The covers were rolled back, last check of the weedhatch and we were ready to push off at 7:15. Blimey it was chilly, I was glad I’d put intermediate thermal socks on this morning and hoped that my hand warmer had some charge left in it. Our ropes being silty from the flooding, York always gives you gritty ropes, gave us muddy hands as we pulled them through the rings, the water now a good few inches lower than when we’d arrived last night.

Kenny stood in the misty sunlight, life jacket on awaiting the first boat, us, into the lock. As we approached I heard a chirp, then a flash of blue as a Kingfisher darted the full length of the lock, swooping up over the bottom gate and vanishing down to the river bank.
We thanked Kenny for looking after us and handed over a couple of bottles of beer. Soon we were followed into the lock by a big smoky cruiser, Richard and Heather on NB Isabella, then bringing up the rear another cruiser, these two had been sitting out the high water on the pontoon by the weir.

Oleanna smiled at us as the water drained out of the lock a marked difference in height from above the lock today. The gates opened and the two cruisers headed out first, they’d be quicker than us narrowboats anyway. With our ropes back on board we pushed off heading into the incoming tide, we’d be pushing against this for a while.
Here we go again!
Tilly had made herself comfortable on one of my tops and planned on snoozing away the morning until shore leave was granted again. The dishwasher was switched on as I came through the boat, best make use of the engine working.
Four years ago the cows had been shrouded in mist
What a glorious morning. Blue skies, a chill in the air, the water higher than when we’d come upstream giving us different views all round.
Mick and Richard had discussed plans of our tidal tansit yesterday. This was to be their first experience of tidal water and Selby Lock would be their second ever lock, Naburn being their first this morning. They certainly had done their homework. We led the way for the most part and kept an ear on the VHF radio. Phone numbers had been exchanged, but for some reason Micks phone rang silently. We were pushing along at our speed but Richard was having difficulty in keeping up, Isabella’s engine a touch smaller than Oleannas. When we got the message we slowed our speed.

Ahead we could hear the cruisers radioing the bridge keeper at Cawood. They needed something like 5 meters plus of air draught and with the tide coming in the bridge would need to be swung for them. When they reached certain landmarks they had to radio again for the bridge keeper to open it to the river.

Mick rang the keeper to check we had enough head height. We almost certainly would, but we should check again when we were closer. As we went under there must have been another meter spare above our heads. Just a shame we didn’t get to see the bridge swing.

We zoomed past where the large tree trunk had been on our way up, no sign of it today. Maybe it was submerged or had been washed away downstream by the flood water. There were fewer trees to negotiate today, infact I think we only passed a couple of branches.

Ahead we could hear the cruisers approaching Selby. Air draughts checked, the bridges would need to swing. In Selby there is the Toll Bridge and the Rail Bridge. So not just a case of opening when the boats were close, there were trains to consider too. The Rail Bridge Keeper had to check with the signal box, there would be a train in 9 minutes then a window of 10. We’re not sure if this meant the cruisers needed to speed up or slow down. More messages between boats and the two bridges, hopefully the following boat would catch the first one up. The last we heard was that Selby Rail bridge was open to the river!
We called Selby Lock as we passed the Turnhead Reach sign. No need for us to check with the bridges, high water had passed we’d have plenty of room. Mick explained that Isabella would head for the lock first and that it was their first time, we would hold back and stem the tide. Once round the big bend to the north of Barlby we slowed right down. This was so that Richard and Heather could overtake us and head to the lock before us.
The reason for this was they would then have the lock to themselves, no trying to negotiate around another boat and with more experience of both tidal waters and our boat we’d be more confident at holding our position and keeping out of the way.
Another call to the Lock Keeper when we reached the long straight before the last bend and bridges, he asked if we had a radio, he’d contact us by this when Isabella was in the lock.
At the final bend we could see Richard zoom out of view, the current round here has been a touch fierce before and then you have to negotiate the bridges. All we could do was wish them luck around the bend.
Selby Toll and Rail Bridges
Straightening up for us took a bit of umph, but we cleared both bridges fine.
Up ahead we could see Isabella quite far over to the south bank. Had they gone past the lock? Yes they had. Mick slowed right down. I moved to the bow before we made any manoeuvre ourselves. Once Mick could see I was in the well deck he pushed the tiller over, the tide pushing us sideways until Oleanna got the better of the current and faced upstream into the out going tide.
Meanwhile Richard had successfully managed to swing Isabella round and we could see them heading for the lock. They they vanished behind the bushes.
Drifting back to the lock
We took our time gradually drifting backwards to the lock. Our manoeuvre had been early giving Richard as much space as he might need. So it took a while for us to drift backwards to the lock. The Lockie chirped up on the radio that we were good to go and that Isabella was on the port side of the lock. Time for me to sort my rope to the right side in the well deck as we carried on drifting back.

Once in a good position we headed for the lock, making sure we didn’t cut the corner, the Lockie signalling when to go for it in towards the lock. Mick swung us in at speed, avoiding the stern being pushed towards the port side, tucked us in next to Isabella without touching a thing. Phew!
Smiles all round. Only their second ever lock and one of the hardest to get into. With ropes carefully round risers we rose up to the Selby Canal. Job done, we’d escaped, time for breakfast.
After a bowl of cereal and a cuppa we pushed off again with the aim of finding somewhere suitable for Tilly. We waved goodbye to Richard and Heather, we’ll most probably see them in a couple of days time when we return for a supermarket delivery.

Under one of the bridges there was a group of young people filming something. When they spotted us they quickly changed their angle, those being filmed sat on railings so as to have us going past in the background. Wonder if we’ll be on telly?
It’s empty!
The first mooring we came across at Burn Bridge was empty, should we stop or carry on? Tilly had been patient for ever such a long time, time to stop. We pulled in, tucked the bow under the willow tree and opened the doors.
With tail held high we had a happy cat again. She got busy very quickly.
With the sun being out I thought hard to see what we could stick on the barbecue. A pack of turkey sausages and some veg halloumi kebabs. I just hoped the sausages would defrost in time! A batch of gf bread rolls were made, cycling watched and Mick got a grade three haircut. A productive afternoon.

I had to make up for lost time. A friend for each day I’d been STUCK inside. Then a couple to celebrate the outside being tied up correctly again.

It turns out that four years ago we’d moored in the same spot with Alison and Laura from NB Large Marge. A barbecue had been enjoyed then too.

Just a big shame we hardly did anything we’d wanted to do whilst there, we’ll just have to go back soon.
PS We won’t be setting a course for intermediate.thermal.socks as it’s in the North of Peru. We don’t think we’d be allowed passage through the Panama Canal, our C&RT licence doesn’t cover South America.
Naburn Water Point Pontoon to Naburn Visitor Moorings
Levels were certainly dropping this morning, but would they get low enough for us to head downstream tomorrow? Our main hope for the day was that the levels would come down enough, early enough for us to play do-ci-do and reverse back to the 48 hour moorings and let Tilly out. We all had our fingers crossed.
Just as we were about to tuck into breakfast we heard an engine and movements from outside. Had someone else arrived? Or was someone leaving?
It was the latter. The Abandoned boat was on the move. Kenny, the Lock Keeper had managed to track down the owner the other day, the chap hadn’t been pleased when he was told his boat had been moved. He apparently changed his mind when he heard that his boat would have sunk if no action had been taken. A couple of days ago smoke was seen coming from the abandoned boats chimney, but nobody saw him until this morning. He asked the hybrid boat to move out as he wanted to be off, so they did as requested. His manoeuvring meant that he ended up across the sterns of everyone else and required a push and then his bow pulling round so that he didn’t remain pinned to us for the rest of the day. He said nothing, headed off upstream, Kenny said he was headed to Linton Lock. Each to their own!
Tom decided to study the charts and lots of words about the Ooose. He obviously needed some assistance so I lent him some, sitting on the book to keep it warm. Very helpful I thought.
Waiting
The lady from NB Gandja came to say hello, we’d been wondering where abouts of the river they’d got to. They had enjoyed their trip up to Ripon and on their way back they had moored at Boroughbridge when the river started to come up. Someone from the homemade vessel, No 9, had knocked on their roof at about midnight and suggested that they should move to the floating pontoon above Milby Lock. The following morning some C&RT staff told them not to move until the level dropped. When it did they had called Kenny at Naburn, but he told them there was no space, so they headed into York Marina as the river was due to rise again. She was hoping for a discount as they weren’t using any of the facilities, just electric and water, at £27.50 a night! Glad we’d headed to the lock! They plan on heading to Selby on Tuesday, so we may see them again down the way.
To while away some of the afternoon we tagged along at the very back of an heritage tour around the lock. These were taking place over the weekend with a volunteer talking about the history of the Ouse and Naburn Lock. We missed about a third of it, but did find out that the lock island had once been home to a corn/flint mill and workers cottages. The mill and lock were serviced by a blacksmith in one of the buildings which still stands.
Up to the yale lock
The chap showed photos of the floods on Boxing Day 2012 when the lock island was under water, right up to the yale lock on the office door, quite impressive. Neither Mick or myself remember that flood, November 2000 was the highest recorded, the gate across the bottom of the lane by my dad’s house had only one bar left above the water on that occasion, I suspect in 2012 there were at least two bars visible.

Back at the boats the level was getting more and more promising. Tilly did her best to be patient, waiting for her shore leave to return. We waited for a view to come back to each side of Oleanna. Being hemmed in without a view was getting to all of us. At least you got to go outside!!
So nearly there!
The afternoon wore on, Jo had headed out to the park with her kids and a friend, maybe we should have done the boat shuffle before she went out. Mick chatted to Kenny and Richard, both of us heading down the lock in the morning, we’d be joined by a couple of cruisers heading to Goole. We waited and waited. Was that Tiger Storm we could hear? We waited. That had to be them! I baked a loaf of bread for Mick and then got a fish crumble ready for the oven.
At half an hour past my dingding the back of Oleanna dipped. Tom went to chat with Jo She, She needed to settle the kids then could move her outside and give us some back. This all took way too long, a Tiger Tom should understand my needs and hopes, but they just slid away.
About to be set free
As Jo pulled back we could just see the edge of the moorings glinting in the evening sun, any earlier and we’d have been paddling. Everyone was out and ready to move round. Jo winded and headed off up the cut to wind again and return to the visitor moorings so her kids could have easy access to the bank.
Then it was our turn. Mick reversed Oleanna back to the nearest end of the moorings. A blast of reverse then an adjustment with forwards meant he flooded the moorings, luckily my end stayed dry, well drier as there was a layer of sticky silt that the ducks had been paddling about in.
Reversing
Doofer moved outwards, the hybrid boat pulled back and Richard reversed NB Isabella back towards the moorings. Doofer and the hybrid moving back in, both against the pontoon. They will be following us down the lock in a few days time.
As we finished tying up, the beeper went announcing that the crumble was ready. It also meant that it was way past cat curfew. Should we risk letting Tilly out for the first time in days. Our decision was no. Should she get carried away and stay out overnight the tide would not wait for us. She would have to make do with a view tonight.
